Wellness Break – Day Fourteen

A HEALTHY HOLIDAY TRICK

Today and tomorrow I’ll be sharing some healthy reminders for our blood sugar levels and our intake of greens. Today, I’ll be focusing on counteracting the additional sugar intake you may be experiencing leading up and through the holidays.

For this, turmeric is your friend! Turmeric is an amazing liver detoxifier and stomach acid regulator. It is also great for stimulation of digestion, is an anti-inflammatory, and has anti-cancer nutrients as well.

Here are two recipes for Turmeric Tea that I came across in 2013 when I did my annual cleanse. They’re from Chef and Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Andrea Potter. Head to her website Rooted Nutrition which will take you to a Healthy Holiday Trick using turmeric! I have made both these teas and like them both! The second reminds me more of Chai – very comforting. They are great to make at the onset of a cold or when you feel a sore throat coming.

TURMERIC TEA:

Ingredients:
1 tsp. powdered turmeric (or about 1 inch fresh turmeric, finely grated) – (if you live in Cordova, you can find at Cam Tu or the Front Door Store)

Pinch of cayenne pepper
raw honey to taste
juice of 1 lemon or 1-2 Tbsp unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
Warm water (not boiling)

Directions:
Pour warm water over ingredients in a mug. If you like the taste, pour a full mug and sip it. If you don’t like the taste, just use less water, let it cool slightly and toss it back. I put the turmeric and cayenne in a small sieve & pour the water over them into my mug.

SOOTHING TURMERIC TEA:

Ingredients:
1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
4 cardamom pods, crushed
6-10 granules fenugreek
1/8 tsp ground, dried ginger
1-2 tsp raw honey
1/3 cup almond milk (or your preferred milk)
2/3 cup water

Directions:
Combine all except honey in a pot and bring to a simmer. Strain into a mug, add honey and enjoy!

May it be of benefit.

Keep tending your fire.
